Zafer Bayrami (Victory Day)

Also called Armed Forces Day, This national holiday commemorates the decisive victory over the invading Greek armies during the War of Independence, which started on August 26, 1922, and ended on August 30 in Dumlupınar, the commander-in-chief of Mustafa Kemal. August 30 symbolically represents the day when the territory was taken back, although occupation troops left the borders of the country later.
Zafer Bayrami (Victory Day) was celebrated for the first time on 30 August 1923 in Afyonkarahisar, Denizli, Kahramanmaraş, Ankara and İzmir.
The official declaration of Zafer Bayrami was on May 1935. Victory Day is celebrated with ceremonies throughout the country. State officials and many citizens visit the Mausoleum in Ankara and the monuments and martyrdoms in other provinces and express their gratitude to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his fellow soldiers who fought under his command.

In almost every settlement, military units participate in parades. Besides, various celebrations are held in foreign representative offices. August 30, are official holidays in Turkey.
